Vinpro recently organised its second information session for young wine producers. The attendees were nominated based on the following criteria: being under 40 years old, having at least two years of full-time experience in wine grape farming, and having potential for a career in the wine industry.

The event was held at Boschendal and Opstal Estate & Restaurant to educate attendees about various aspects of the wine industry. Topics included the differences between top profitable wine producers according to the Vinpro Production Plan, succession planning for family businesses, upcoming technology in vineyards and implications for future work and skills in the industry.

Last year, attendees at the session were encouraged to seek out a mentor who is not only an expert in their field but also respects them as an individual. Frans Malherbe drew parallels with rugby, advising that a mentor should impart knowledge in a way that is beneficial for your career growth.

This year’s session featured Jacques Hannekom, the esteemed Head of rugby at Stellenbosch Academy of Sport and mentor to Frans, as a special guest. Hanekom shared his personal experiences and placed great emphasis on the pivotal role of mentorship in professional development.

Francois Viljoen, the GEN-Z Project Manager and Vineyard Consultant at Vinpro, who convened the event, explained that the purpose of the initial meeting was mainly to transfer information to equip the attendees with knowledge about the industry. Francois emphasised the importance of being well-informed, stating, “An informed industry can only bring benefits. You are the future leaders of this industry. You are chosen and should be proud of it. A mentor can play a crucial role in the success of your career. Seek mentors in your work environment and find others at a higher level to guide you. A mentor provides guidance, advice, patience, listens, and offers different perspectives.”
