On 11 July 2021 President Ramaphosa announced that South Africa would remain at Covid-19 Alert Level 4 until 25 July 2021, which includes an extended ban on all domestic wine sales.

See the latest regulations in Government Gazette No 44838. In essence, the regulations remain the same as the previous two weeks in terms of the effect on the wine and wine tourism sectors, with the exception of the following:

Regulation 21(10)(a)(b) allows for restaurants and in-house dining facilities to reopen at a maximum capacity of 50 persons, or 50% of the venue’s capacity, and according to strict health and safety protocols.

Although the latest regulations do not explicitly allow for the transportation of wine other than for export purposes, and while we are still awaiting feedback from Government on Vinpro and Salba’s urgent request to approve these exemptions, the following legal opinions by Danie Cronjé Attorneys still hold:

Transport of bulk wine to bottling plants
Transport of wine samples
