We talk to a cellar each month about their business, what makes them lie awake at night and what gives them hope. “Be patient, be prepared to be diligent, and know that there simply is no replacement for tile and dedication,” says Ken Forrester, director, and CEO at Ken Forrester Wines.
Congratulations on your recent Man of the Year award from The Drinks Business. What does this award mean to you?
Well, I’m humbled – it’s an awesome accolade and just incredible to be recognised internationally by one’s peers.
Ken Forrester Wines celebrates its 30th anniversary next year, what are some of the most notable lessons you’ve learned in the past three decades building your brand?
The most notable lesson – is simply never giving up – no matter how impossible it seems, and there were times when it seemed impossible!
It’s Chenin Blanc month this month, how will you be celebrating?
I’ll be doing my very best to get an American contingent to #drinkchenin with me in Colorado.
The South African wine industry is seeing a lot of foreign investment in wineries and the purchasing of brands. What opportunities are they seeing?
It’s all about how great our wines are – without a doubt the best wines are comparable to any in the world, and we can make awesome wines year after year.
Mentorship is close to your heart, what advice do you have for young producers seeking mentorship? How should they set about approaching someone to mentor them?
Be patient, be prepared to be diligent, and know that there simply is no replacement for tile and dedication. Essentially if you want to master a skill it’s broadly accepted that you’ll need to spend 10 000 hours practicing. Start now.
