The South African wine industry launched a survey today that will enable it to determine the economic value of the wine tourism sector.

“The survey will provide us with a credible benchmark, which we can use to track the wine tourism industry’s progress against its 2025 objectives,” says Marisah Nieuwoudt, wine tourism manager of the wine industry body Vinpro, who commissioned the research.

The wine tourism sector aims to increase visitation to South Africa’s wine routes, increase revenue, create new job opportunities and improve regional dispersal of visitors across all twenty-three wine routes.

The survey will be conducted amongst wine producers and cellars represented by Vinpro, as well as South Africa’s wine route offices. “They will be asked to provide information on the tourism activities and experiences on their farms in order to quantify the direct, indirect and induced income and employment in the wine tourism industry. All information provided will be treated as confidential and will only be utilised in aggregate,” Marisah says.

The information collected will also form part of the Macro-Economic Impact of the Wine Industry on the South African Economy study conducted by SA Wine Industry Information and Systems (SAWIS) every five years.

Martin Jansen van Vuuren from Futureneer Advisors will manage the wine tourism study. “We ask that all wine producers and cellars participate in the survey so that a credible annual benchmark can be established and we can analyse wine tourism on a regional basis,” he says.

The survey will be conducted from 5 February 2020 until 13 March 2020 to provide as many wine producers and cellars as possible an opportunity to provide input and contribute to the quantification of the economic value of the wine tourism industry.
