Etienne Terblanche
Etienne Terblanche joined the Vinpro team as viticulturist for the Coastal region on 1 December 2018.
He brings with him close to ten years’ experience as viticulturist, including six years at Delheim in Stellenbosch, and more recently working with clients such as Remhoogte, Oldenburg Vineyards, Alheit Vineyards, Lowerland and Le Lude.
“We look forward to adding Etienne’s fresh and innovative perspective to the Vinpro consultation team,” says Francois Viljoen, manager of Vinpro Consultation Services.
“His diverse background and solid foundation in both the science of viticulture, as well as practical consultation, enables him to understand the interaction between vineyard and wine really well. He will definitely add value to wine grape producer and winery clients in the Coastal region,” says Conrad Schutte, Vinpro Consultation Services assistant manager.
The Coastal region includes Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Somerset West, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Elgin, Bot River and Elim.
“The most important aspect of viticulture consultation is cultivating an understanding that everyday decisions made in the vineyard can have a major impact on the final product in the bottle,” says Etienne. “There is a renewed energy in the Coastal region. I look forward to helping producers to further unlock the potential of the distinctive terroirs in this region,” he adds.
After completing a BSc in Viticulture and Oenology and Honours degree in Viticulture, Etienne went on to complete an MSc via the international Vinifera Euromaster. He is currently completing his PhD in Viticulture, focusing on the relationship between grape ripeness level and its effect on wine style and sensory properties of Pinotage.
Vinpro is a non-profit company which represents 2 500 South African wine grape producers, cellars and wine-related businesses, while providing strategic direction, rendering specialised services and driving people development. The Consultation Service division has seven regional viticulturists, a soil scientist and a GIS specialist.
