Alto Estate, outside Stellenbosch, appointed Bertho van der Westhuizen to take over the reins from his well-known father, Schalk. This marks the fifth appointment of a winemaker on this estate in nearly a century.

Bertho has had experience in the whole spectrum of viticulture and winemaking responsibilities, having previously worked at Citrusdal Cellar, Kleine Zalze and more recently as red-wine maker at Boschendal.

Previous winemakers at Alto included Piet du Toit who handed over the responsibilities of this award-winning estate to his son, Hempies, the former Springbok prop.
